Current Research
My core interest is understanding the strategies small ethnic groups use to survive. My research interests focus on Native North America, Australia, and Oceania. Most of my research has been on the Cherokee Indians of North Carolina, especially the previously unstudied Snowbird Community. I have also done some research on the Shawnee, Navajo, Native Hawaiians, and urban Appalachians. Presently I am researching Black Cherokees, people of African and Cherokee descent, who were forced off Cherokee rolls despite having more than the minimal Cherokee blood degree. I have done historical research and continued that research through interviews.
